September 20th at noon -- Maurice Jones, President and Publisher of The Virginia-Pilot

**Note:  please RSVP by September 10th**
September’s speaker for the South Hampton Roads Leadership Prayer Luncheon is Maurice Jones, who became President and Publisher of the Virginian-Pilot in early 2008. He has worked for 5 years with Landmark Communications. Maurice earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1992, where he was a Hardy Cross Dillard Scholar, and directed an elementary school tutoring program during his time there. In 1988, he received a Master of Philosophy in International Relations from Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. His concentrations were Strategic Studies and International Political Economy, and his thesis focused on US/Haiti relations. As an undergraduate student at Hampden-Sydney College, he spent 2 years directing a tutoring program at Prince Edward County High School, and was student government president, Phi Beta Kappa, and valedictorian of his class.

Maurice grew up listening to the gospel songs his grandmother, Mrs. Rosa Hatchett, loved to sing. One of her favorites includes the lines: “Nobody told me that the road would be easy. I don’t believe He brought me this far to leave me,” and she would often tell Maurice, “Never quit.” He wrote, “Grandma’s song invites us to refuse to be defeated, to be resilient. As long as we don’t quit: employers will start hiring again; people will resume buying houses; banks will make more loans; roads, schools and water quality will improve; and the recession will end.” Maurice is an elder at First Presbyterian Church and sings in the choir. He is married to Lisa and they have one daughter, Michela.

Courageous Faith in an Uncertain World

Tom Knox has dedicated his life to helping seniors after watching his beloved grandparents suffer needlessly in their senior years.
